SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST @ The Boxing Room

Inside the diary of a fitness ‘first-timer’

by Lauren Hermon

I’m the kind of girl who generally starts her mornings with a can of V energy drink and a chocolate doughnut. So, you can only imagine how I felt when I was asked to take on this story.

For someone who rarely exercises, and has a shamefully bad habit of puffing on a cigarette or two, I knew I’d have to survive four very different fitness classes and live to ‘write’ the tale.

So, with the thought of me walking down the aisle next April, I donned full gym attire, swapped the caffeinated drinks for a bottle of water, laced up my new Nike trainers, which I bought especially for this assignment, and prepared myself for the sweat (and possible tears) ahead. Here’s how it went down…

Packing a punch with The Boxing Room I chat with Elle Crawford – Trainer @ The Boxing Room…

TELL ME A BIT OF BACKGROUND ABOUT TBR.

Two best friends fell in love with boxing fitness! We wanted to do something together to support health and  fitness and saw the bigger vision to bring boxing fitness  to the marketplace. Within three months, we were fully booked with 50 people on our waiting list. That was eight years ago and we’ve grown and changed over that time.

WHAT PARTS OF THE BODY DOES IT TARGET?

Boxing fitness is a total body workout; however, by nature, much of the focus is on the arms, legs and core. We add other exercises to work different muscle groups as well.

It’s amazing at building cardio fitness quickly as it is mostly interval training – short bursts of hard work that increase the heart rate quickly, followed by rests to reduce the heart rate. It’s also a great ‘toner’, strength builder and stress reliever.

ANY PREREQUISITES?

No, however, every new member completes a technique class to show them everything we do in our classes. We also run beginner classes called ‘Ease Into It’ to help them transition into more intense workouts, but people who have been exercising previously are fine to jump straight into one of our regular classes.

WILL BOXING MAKE ME ‘BULKY’?

Don’t fret, girls – boxing makes the muscles long, lean and defined. Women especially love it because it engages muscles that they don’t normally use – it tones the arms and is great for the legs and butt too!

WILL I GET HURT?

As trainers, we’re really vigilant about providing a safe environment in our classes. There is no contact between participants; all contact is with our bags or in personal training sessions with a specialised trainer who may use focus pads. There is absolutely no sparring in classes.

ANY NEW PROJECTS UNDERWAY?

We’re launching a winter program called ‘Beat the Winter Creep!’ It’s designed to help people avoid those sneaky five kilos we often find ourselves hanging onto come the warmer weather. Within this program, we will be offering fitness testing, goal mentoring plus our classes, boxing fitness, weights programs, Pilates and kettle bell classes.

We’ve also got the ‘Total Body Revolution Winter Challenge’ to help our members get through the winter unscathed. It’s a full six week membership for boxing fitness classes; weights training; Pilates; and kettle bell classes. To monitor participants’ progress, they’re fitness tested before and after the challenge. The challenge starts 14 July, with registrations the week prior.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

I love that we provide a place for people to exercise, where they are known by name and are welcomed with smiles and often hugs. Most importantly, I love seeing people work their butts off and then walk out the door with red faces and big smiles!

WHAT THE MEMBERS SAY…

“As a previous fitness instructor, I have been searching to find ‘something’ that would be fun, help me maintain my fitness, get to know people and hopefully have music and a great atmosphere. I have tried various gyms, but always got bored and found I didn’t get value by either not attending or using the equipment. TBR staff are, not only friendly, but make it their business to learn everyone’s name and the atmosphere is one of a very large happy family!” – Lynne

DID YOU KNOW…?

A 45 minute TBR session can burn anywhere from 350 to 550 calories, so it’s brilliant to help weight loss and maintenance.
