We chat with one of our LOCAL LOVES, jewellery artist Erica Sandgren who is known for her stunning eye-catching pieces.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a jewellery artist and create handmade wearable works that (hopefully!) women enjoy wearing.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING IT FOR?
I studied Visual Arts for 4 years at the South Australian School of Art where I ‘discovered’ my passion and drive for making, in particular jewellery. I started creating jewellery and refining my aesthetic in 2013 and for the last year-18 months I have been selling through stockists and markets.
WHAT’S YOUR VISION?
I strive to create unique, one of a kind wearable works made by hand that women feel a connection too and that portray a little sneak peak of their personality. Because I am influenced quite heavily by colour and colour combinations, it’s really nice to see how people react to each piece and what they are most attracted too.
WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU?
A little bit crazy? Every day varies.. I’m either working, studying or making and they’re constantly over lapping! There is always something on the go.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
My main inspiration is colour. I love to experiment with different colour combinations which works well with my medium of resin and it’s so open to being experimental and exploratory. Aside from that I’m inspired by life, as cliché as it may sound. Nature, travel, the world and colours I see around me. I think it all feeds into what I do and make.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO CREATE A PIECE?
It varies.. I have a bit of a production system going now, so it’s rare that I would create just one piece, unless it’s a custom piece. Also styles that I’ve made many pieces from take me less than new works because there is more trial and error with new works at first. But once I’ve ‘mastered’ the making process for a certain style, it takes me less time to whip a piece up!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PIECE?
Ooh, not sure about that! I have a strong connection to the work I made throughout my studies, in particular my honours collection, as I think it was the start of my practice and shaped my aesthetic. I tend to make a batch of works and pick a piece or two to keep for myself – usually based on the colours I’ve come up with. I have a new favourite each week or so!
GETTING TO KNOW ERICA…
To unwind I like to…sit down with a cup of tea and RELAX! Or equally I love going out for lunch or dinner with friends.
If you know me you’ll know… I love food! I’m always thinking about my next meal and what I can have!
You won’t know that I… had every intention of studying photography at university, but somehow ended up majoring in jewellery and well, the rest is history!
The best place to get a coffee is… Brick and Mortar in Norwood. Not only is the coffee great but it has a lovely atmosphere as your surrounded by creative people. It’s also a great place to shop and pick up a beautifully made creation ..or two!
My anthem is… Anything by Mumford and Sons! I have a massive soft spot for their chilled folk sound!
I never leave the house without...my phone! Hate to admit it but it’s almost always in my hand! But who’s isn’t these days, right?
I’m obsessed with…buying work from local creative souls! It’s a bit dangerous when I’m selling at a market, I usually end up wandering around and spending some or most of the money I’ve just earned!
