When football star-turned-cricketer Alex Carey met local Adelaide occupational therapist Eloise there was an instant attraction – what followed was four years of fabulous friendship, fun, plenty of cricket and, eventually, a spectacular winery wedding in the picturesque Adelaide Hills.

The Love Story
Alex and I met shortly after he moved back to Adelaide, having spent two years in Sydney playing AFL for Great Western Sydney. We met at the Hackney, he came up with some of his friends and started talking to us, he bought us a drink and we started chatting. My friend and I were supposed to go on to a fundraiser later that night but we got so caught up talking that we missed most of it!
We got engaged in Bali! We often go there during winter to escape the cold – it was the day after my birthday and we had gone out for dinner. After dinner we went for a walk and Alex proposed. My mum and sister flew to Bali a few days later and we spent the rest of the trip celebrating!
I read through some magazines and a few blogs and found invitations with a border of bright watercolour flowers from Kathryn Green Illustration, which Alex and I both loved. We ended up using this design as the foundation for the theme, and tried to make everything else tie in with this. I managed to track down a very talented Adelaide cake decorator [Amanda from How Sweet It Is] to paint the flowers from our invitations onto our wedding cake. Our florist [Sam from Fabulous Functions at Reynella] was unbelievably skilled and able to continue our theme by matching the flowers to the invite.
I tried on a few dresses before I found my dress, but I didn’t really feel comfortable in any of them. I didn’t want to wear anything too boofy that would stop me from dancing. Then I tried on my dress, which had a lace bodice and a silk skirt with lace applique, and it was just perfect!
The morning of the wedding was fun, but a bit stressful! My hair took longer than expected so we were running an hour late. I had to rush home from the salon, throw on my wedding dress and jump in the car to get to the ceremony. It was a mad rush!
The ceremony and reception was at the beautiful Golding Winery in Lobethal – we both love the Adelaide Hills (and wine!) so this was an easy choice. The weather forecast was looking dubious leading up to the day so at the last minute we hired a marquee for the ceremony through Aussie Party Hire. They set up a clear marquee, so you could still see the vines and beautiful gardens, and decorated it with fairy lights that hung from the ceiling.
We couldn’t go on our honeymoon straight after our wedding because Alex, who is a wicketkeeper for the Adelaide Strikers and Westend Redbacks, had to fly to Sydney for the Matador Cup four days later. So, we had a few nights in the Adelaide Hills at a bed and breakfast and then honeymooned in April this year.
