It’s that time of the year again, when Bowerbird Design Market descends on Adelaide for three days of shopping, innovation, design envy and inspirational gift-giving. We catch up with three of Bowerbirds 2017 stallholders to talk mineral makeup and summer staples.
Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics
Tell us a bit about the Gemma Vendetta range.
Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics is a high-end, simple to use, ‘no-fuss’ mineral cosmetics range that is made right here in Australia. The range includes a brand new, nourishing Jojoba Black Mascara, as well as the number one best-selling BB/CC Cream and soon-to-be-available Multi Palettes for eyes + brows + cheeks.
Your all-natural makeup range came about after a multiple sclerosis diagnosis – can you tell us a bit about how this chemical-free range has had a positive impact on your health?
Since my diagnosis in 2007, and as a result of making small, yet consistent changes, I am now 10 years relapse free and two years without any disease progression. There’s no coincidence that, as all Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics products are tested on ‘Gemma’ and not animals, I have no skin irritation, no redness, no inflammation and no niggling worries about what I’m putting on my skin!
How has your Bowerbird stall helped with the growth of your brand?
My first Bowerbird was earlier this year, and while I’ve been an avid fan and long-time attendee of Bowerbird I never imagined how much the brand-alliance and the prestige of Bowerbird would help to cement Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics in the minds of my desired customers. In the lead-up to the upcoming Bowerbird I have received many messages asking if GVC will be there again!
There seems to be an increased demand for natural, chemical-free products, do you feel people are more receptive to your brand and what it stands for now than they were when you launched your range in 2006?
There has definitely been a noticeable shift and increase in demand for Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics since I officially launched in 2016. And since the birth of my original idea more and more consumers are choosing to live a healthier lifestyle. Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics is building up somewhat of a cult following, and the feedback that I receive is that GVC is solving a myriad of skin conditions, and ethical issues too (GVC is certified vegan + cruelty free by Choose Cruelty Free).
What’s next for Gemma Vendetta?
My range has just been head-hunted for expansion into Western Australia, I’m very excited to see Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics reach an eager and well-educated consumer base in health food stores across the west!
Tell me a bit about your summer collection?
This is the launch of robbieingo and is full of all of my favourite styles. Easy weekend and summer pieces designed to be worn in a relaxed way. All pieces are produced either in 100 percent linen made specifically to my request (I love gauzy soft linen), as well as 100 percent cotton voile. The styles are all fitted to provide a flattering shape for all sizes and each one has a special detail, whether it be embroidered cotton, pockets, drawstrings, lace insets or a stunning back detail.
What’s the best thing about having a stall at Bowerbird?
This is my first time showing at Bowerbird and I feel very fortunate to be included in such an amazing design line up.
What can market-goers expect from your stall?
I have a love of pink so there will be a pink presence, [as well as] beautiful images, and a simple relaxed set up where customers can stop and chat and enjoy the collection. One of my other passions is reading, so for each purchase the customer will receive a special bookmark sharing my friends favourite books and quotes.
Describe Robbieingo’s signature style.
Beautiful detailed pieces in soft floating fabrics that just make you feel good.
The Wolf and I
Tell us about The Wolf and I – when was the brand launched? How did it come about?
The Wolf and I clothing launched in Melbourne 2011. Having spent many years working in the fashion industry, it was exciting to start my own business and join the slow fashion revolution! Designing a women’s clothing range specifically catering to designer markets enable me to find the perfect balance between being creative with my work and caring for my family. The Wolf and I summer collection is a small capsule of timeless everyday clothing, using textured natural fabrics. The colour palette is neutral with a little twist of colour.
In three words, describe The Wolf and I look.
Effortless, natural, layered.
What summer staple should every woman own?
Anything linen! Especially crinkled linen. The Go With The Flow crinkle linen top is so lovely to wear and easy to care for. Perfect for travelling as there is no ironing required!
What’s the best thing about selling your clothing at a market?
Over the years I have established a wonderful relationship with my Bowerbird customers. Listening to their feedback is always inspiring. They love to find unique pieces that you just can’t buy in mainstream stores. Sometimes they even bring me coffee!
Where do you see your brand in five years’ time?
The Wolf and I have just moved into a new studio in Balaclava, Melbourne. I will continue to do as many designer markets as I can, plus keep growing my online business. One day I would love to open a little store in my local area selling my linen clothing and vintage home wares.
