Meet the original Lady Burra – she was ahead of her game, independent and unique. Taking inspiration from this historic figure, Lady Burra Brewhouse offers honest food that’s full of heart and flavour, as well as premium handcrafted beers to wash it down.
For a relatively new venue, this west-end gem has a sordid history – we are, of course, referring to its namesake. Lady Burra was a young girl from outback South Australia who fell in love and married an American brewer – but when her husband suddenly died from illness Lady Burra was accused of his murder. The trial was a sensation with crowds filling the court and spilling onto the streets. Despite pleading not guilty, Lady Burra was sentenced to death, making her the first and only woman to ever be hanged in the Adelaide Gaol. The Lady Burra Brewhouse is a tribute to the spirit and legacy of this South Australian legend.
Adelaide’s only inner city microbrewery has an impressive selection of brews on tap, including a core range of all-natural Pilsner, Pale Ale, Irish Red Ale and India Pale Ale. Not a beer drinker? Not to worry, there’s a long list of other options on offer too. However, these boys do love their beer so expect to find some beer-infused cocktails on the menu. A must-try is the Madame Currie – with notes of floral and citrus courtesy of Citra Hops straight from the brewery, this beautiful blend of white rum, grapefruit and lime is sure to be your new after-five favourite.
Not to be outdone, the kitchen puts its own spin on the beer-inspired menu, using Lady Burra’s boutique brews in marinades and sauces – we can’t go past the delicious Pale Ale marinated chicken! Head chefs Rosa and Gaspar hail from Portugal, so the menu has a distinct Portuguese flair – think paella, tapas and sumptuous homemade Portuguese tarts. Of course, there’s the usual pub grub too, like tasty burgers and wood-fired pizzas.
Pairing your meal with the perfect brew is a big part of the Lady Burra experience. Alongside the beers on offer you can find the Boilermakers List – an entire menu dedicated to boutique whisky. This carefully curated menu pairs a beer, whisky and a morsel of food, like a Pilsner with a nip of 10-year-old Glenmorangie and Scottish shortbread, or stout with a dash of Ardbeg served with Haigh’s dark chocolate.
These clever menus complement the architecturally-savvy interior of this inner-city space. Open ceilings and exposed steel staircases suggest an industrial-vibe, as do the gleaming stainless steel beer drums that can be viewed through floor-to-ceiling windows. The addition of stripped-back timber and the wafts of home cooking from the open kitchen adds warmth and intimacy.
Lady Burra is the total package. Hearty home cooked food with a Portuguese twist will satisfy the foodies, while beer lovers will appreciate the handcrafted brews on tap. The comfy booth seating nestled alongside a sky-high hand-painted mural of the elusive Lady Burra is the perfect place to enjoy a bite and a brew, and the venue’s brand new outdoor deck will be a summer favourite.
