Australian fashion designer Alice McCALL recently showcased her latest collection at New York Fashion Week for the first time. We were lucky enough to chat to Alice just after her NYFW debut…
How did it feel to take part in NYFW this year?
It was very exciting to be showcasing our SS18 collection on schedule at NYFW for the first time! There is a lot of potential for the brand internationally and this was a perfect time for such great exposure in the US. We also launched on Net-A-Porter recently and couldn’t be happier with our sell-through, which shows that there is huge opportunity in the international market for our brand.
What’s the inspiration behind your latest collection??
Our FW18 collection ‘Portrait of a Lady’ exudes a sense of fun and spontaneity. I was really inspired by mid-century modern mixed with disco night vibes. The collection tells the story of playing dress up in your mother’s wardrobe and indulging in her high-octane glamour. I’ve explored different ways of designing and styling in this collection; incorporating bespoke jacquards, laces, diamonds and pearls to ultimately create a collection that’s a bit rock ‘n’ roll and also speaks to ‘80s power dressing.
What’s your favourite piece?
There are so many stand-out pieces from the collection it’s hard to select just one piece.
The show stoppers were our pleated metallic gold and blue crop and skirt sets. They were a modern retake on the classic gown and were quite opulent on the runway. I also loved our luxe leather pieces. They have been designed in strong burgundy and black colourways featuring gold hardware finishes.
Which designers were you most excited to see and why?
I really enjoyed Ulla Johnson’s collection last season so I was looking forward to seeing what she presented this time.
How do you think joining NYFW will change your brand?
Having the international exposure from NYFW is a really important next step for us. I designed this runway collection to be more elevated than past collections without forgetting our signature silhouettes and core customer. I feel that being a part of NYFW has taken our brand to a new level and we are very excited for what’s to come.
