South Australia is world-renowned for its fresh seafood and, eager to try our state’s finest, we opt to start with local scallops. Married beautifully with flavours of cauliflower and chorizo crumb, this dish is the perfect starter.
The expertly crafted winter menu specialises in local cuts of meat such as venison from the Limestone Coast, goat from the Adelaide plains and impressive beef shanks from Hahndorf. We road-test the impressive Tomahawk steak – served with baby roasted vegetables, red wine jus and béarnaise, this one kilo cut presented on a large wooden plank is the restaurant’s signature dish. Char-grilled and created for sharing, it’s perfect for those who prefer their steak cooked from rare to medium and has mouths watering before it hits the table. If you’re keen to stick with the seafood, it’s hard to go past the barramundi. The light and fresh grilled barramundi with shaved fennel salad is balanced perfectly with the creaminess of the rich macadamia crust.
Of course, dessert is a must and even after the show-stopping steak we still manage to squeeze in something sweet. The chocolate brownie with a white chocolate cream quenelle and sprinkled with candied peanut butter biscuit is a tasty closer.
From deep Barossa shiraz to crisp Clare Valley riesling – vino lovers rejoice! True to its name, Coal Cellar + Grill’s glass-enclosed wine cellar displays over 500 labels and holds over 3,000 bottles, predominantly South Australian, featuring the very best of the state. Sip on pinot meunier from Ochota Barrels in the Adelaide Hills and cabernet-tempranillo from Fox Gordon in the Barossa Valley.

Winter Food and Wine Series
After a successful 2017, Coal Cellar + Grills Winter Food and Wine Series is back featuring three carefully selected dishes with locally sourced ingrediants and matched suberbly with local wine from the restaurants sommelier. Showcased over the three months of winter. the highlight of June will be goat from the Adelaide Plains paired with GIbson Wines. In July, enjoy, beef shanks from Hahndorf with wine from Spinifex Wines, Robert Johnson and Grand Casino and in August the menu will feature venison from the Limestone Coast matched to wines from the Mclaren Vale region. Masters of grilling, featuring the finest cuts and their own butchery department, the quality here is second to none!
