Being a strong independent woman usually represents someone who has been through the ups and downs in life and still stands tall. She has the capacity to be vulnerable and live her life with a full heart. She is fierce, mature and resilient and through all her let downs still has the capacity to love. She loves herself enough to get back up and face the world, even when times have challenged her otherwise. So what makes her different to those that struggle? SELF LOVE!
From a young age, media, culture and society have taught us that ‘loving yourself’ can come across as vain or narcissistic, but in reality it’s an essential part of having a healthy level of self-esteem. Our self-esteem is a great predictor of how we treat the people around us and influences the experiences we have. However, when our self-esteem is low, it can impact many areas of our lives, from our relationships to our wellbeing and health. Loving yourself is extremely important for our well-being.
So why do others struggle with practicing a bit of self-love? Are they worried about appearing vain or narcissistic? Is it a word that’s thrown around so much, and people don’t actually know what it really means?
So what is self-love and why should we all be doing it?
Self-love is about your own self-worth, your attitude towards yourself. It’s not about being vain or narcissistic, it’s about being kind to yourself and acknowledging the deeper you. It’s celebrating your vulnerabilities; it’s accepting your heart and cherishing your soul. It’s the ability to think a negative thought about yourself and let it go in passing, rather than ruminating over them more than they need.
Self-love is an attitude and it’s something that should be encouraged. Having a healthy attitude about yourself is an attribute that will benefit not only you, but also everyone around you.
