From a young age, media, culture and society have taught us that ‘loving yourself’ can come across as vain or narcissistic, but in reality it’s an essential part of having a healthy level of self-esteem. Our self-esteem is a great predictor of how we treat the people around us and influences the experiences we have. However, when our self-esteem is low, it can impact many areas of our lives, from our relationships to our wellbeing and health. Loving yourself is extremely important for our well-being.

It’s the ability to think a negative thought about yourself and let it go in passing, rather than ruminating over them more than they need.

Self-love is an attitude and it’s something that should be encouraged. Having a healthy attitude about yourself is an attribute that will benefit not only you, but also everyone around you.

1. Ground Yourself

Whether this is in the form of meditation, religion or yoga practice. Create your own rituals that will give you time to connect with yourself. Listen to your soul – it will guide you with what feels right for you.

2. Make a Vision Board

Create a board that encapsulates everything that embodies you, what you love, what you desire and what you are grateful for. Hang it up where you can and look at it every day.

3. Get an Awesome Playlist

When you’re feeling less than fabulous, throw on some tunes to help you get back into the right vibe again.

4. Create a Morning Routine

Get up a little early in the mornings to spend sometime to yourself. Brew/buy your favourite coffee or tea, be still, say a prayer, write in your journal or meditate. Take your time getting ready and before you leave, look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself you are beautiful and that you love yourself dearly.

5. Clean Out the Clutter

Start with cleaning out a small space, like your closet or desk at work. Being more organised in your environment and cleaning out the clutter can help cleanse the mind and allow you to feel more at ease!

6. Exercise

Work out! Those feel-good endorphins are no myth; they really make you feel good! Incorporate and exercise routine into your day, you’ll feel refreshed and motivated.

7. Treat Your Body Like a Temple

Learning to love your body will allow you to be mindful of what you put in it and will enable you to focus on nourishing it with healthy foods.

8. Pamper Yourself

Take a bath, light some candles put on some soothing music, paint your nails, and get a facial. Whatever you like, do it! When you think you look good, you also feel good.

9. Take Yourself to Bed Earlier

Create a nighttime routine and get some well-deserved rest. Getting enough sleep will help alleviate the symptoms depression, irritability, and gives you energy to handle your day and keep a healthy sex drive. Leave your phone in another room or at least away from your night stand, drink a hot cup of tea, and focus on your breathing before you sleep.

10. Keep a Journal

Using a journal is a healthy way to release the thoughts and feelings we harbour throughout the day. Journaling keeps you in tune of who you are and where you’re going. Even if you manage to write just one line, make it your goal to write something every day.

11. Drink PLENTY of Water

It’s simple, but we often forget! Your insides and skin will love you for it! Not to mention it helps keep the kilos away!

12. Learn to Forgive

Be kind to yourself and to others. Forgiveness offers a sense of freedom. It allows you to let go of the things you cannot control, those things that hold you down. Forgiveness is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and your soul.
